Long Beach Uber Accident Lawyer

Uber Accident Attorney Long Beach

You booked a ride from Long Beach Airport or a downtown hotel and expected to arrive. Or you were on foot or on a bike when a car with a rideshare sticker pulled across your path. Now you are hurt, and the insurance that pays depends on what the driver’s app was doing at the second of impact.

If you were hurt in an Uber or Lyft crash in Long Beach, as a passenger, driver, pedestrian, or cyclist, Ravan Law can help. We find out which coverage applied, request the trip data early, and check whether a public agency shortened your deadline to six months.

Our office is on San Vicente Boulevard in Los Angeles. We represent Long Beach clients from there, with consultations by phone or video. Call (424) 465-2500 for a free consultation. Information is available in Spanish. No fee unless we win.

Long Beach Uber Accident Lawyer: Where Rideshare Crashes Happen Here

Long Beach Airport. The airport directs Uber, Lyft, and other app-based rides to the outer curb in front of the terminal. Drivers watching the app, passengers loading bags beside moving cars, and vehicles pulling out from the curb make a tight space. The airport is owned and operated by the City of Long Beach, so a collision with an airport vehicle, or one caused by a hazard on an airport roadway, is a claim against the City.

Downtown and the waterfront. Ocean Boulevard, Shoreline Drive, and Pine Avenue carry hotel, restaurant, and event pickups. Drivers stop in travel lanes and bike lanes to meet a rider.

The Metro A Line stations. Eight A Line stations sit inside Long Beach, from Wardlow south to Downtown Long Beach, and the line now runs to Pomona. Riders step off a train and into a rideshare car at the curb.

The freeways. Longer trips use the I-405, the I-710, and SR-91, where a rideshare car shares lanes with port trucks.

The people most at risk are often outside the car. The City’s Safe Streets Long Beach data for 2013 to 2017 found that pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists were involved in 14 percent of collisions but made up 65 percent of people killed or seriously injured. Drivers must yield in crosswalks (Vehicle Code 21950) and leave three feet when passing a cyclist (Vehicle Code 21760), and no one may open a door into traffic unless it is reasonably safe (Vehicle Code 22517). Our guide for people hit by an Uber or Lyft driver as a pedestrian or cyclist covers these cases.

Who writes the report

The Long Beach Police Department takes the report for a crash on city streets. The California Highway Patrol handles most freeway collisions. Tell the officer the driver was on a rideshare trip so that it is written down.

Which Insurance Pays After a Long Beach Uber or Lyft Crash

Uber and Lyft are transportation network companies, regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission. Under Public Utilities Code 5433, coverage depends on the driver’s app status. SB 371, effective January 1, 2026, cut passenger UM/UIM coverage to $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident. Here is how it applies to a trip in Long Beach:

Driver’s statusLong Beach exampleCoverage
App offDriving home after the last trip of the nightThe driver’s personal auto insurance only
App on, no ride acceptedCircling near the airport waiting for a request$50,000 per person and $100,000 per incident for bodily injury, $30,000 property damage, plus a $200,000 excess policy
Ride accepted, through the end of the tripHeading to a downtown hotel to collect you, or carrying you$1,000,000 third-party liability when the rideshare driver is at fault
Passenger aboard, hit by an uninsured or underinsured driverAnother driver runs a light on PCH and has no insuranceUninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage of $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident

The last row is where passengers get hurt twice. Before 2026 that coverage was $1 million. Today, if the driver who hit your rideshare has no insurance, $60,000 may be all the rideshare policy offers you, and several injured passengers share the $300,000 cap. We look for every other source, starting with your own auto policy. Our explainer on uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage shows how the layers fit.

Proving the app status. Insurers often claim the app was off or no ride had been accepted. The trip records and GPS logs answer that, and we request them in writing early. Your own screenshots and receipt email are often the cleanest proof of when the trip began.

Uber or Lyft. The rules are the same for both apps; the practical differences are in Lyft accident vs Uber accident claims.

When a Public Agency Is Part of a Long Beach Rideshare Crash

A rideshare trip in Long Beach crosses several agencies’ vehicles and property. Each one that shares fault must receive its own written claim within six months of the injury (Government Code 911.2), before any lawsuit, and the two-year statute does not extend that.

  • City of Long Beach. Airport vehicles and roadways, city trucks, police cars, and city streets and signals. The City’s claim form goes to the City Clerk at 411 West Ocean Boulevard.
  • Long Beach Transit. Its routes serve the airport. Long Beach Transit is separately incorporated from the City, so we confirm where its claim must be presented before filing.
  • LA Metro. Metro buses and the A Line. See how to file a claim against LA Metro after an injury.
  • State of California. A defect on the I-405, the I-710, SR-91, or PCH. A claim of $12,500 or less goes to the Caltrans district claims office. A claim over $12,500 goes to the state’s Government Claims Program at the Department of General Services.

A public entity answers for its employee’s negligent driving on the job (Vehicle Code 17001). So if a Long Beach Transit bus struck your Lyft, you may have two claims at once: one against the bus operator on the six-month track, and one under the rideshare coverage.

What a Long Beach Uber Accident Claim Can Recover

  • Economic damages: emergency treatment, surgery, rehabilitation, future care, lost wages, and lost earning capacity.
  • Non-economic damages: pain, anxiety and post-traumatic stress, disfigurement, and the loss of your normal life.

A passenger is rarely assigned any fault. If you were a pedestrian or cyclist and the insurer says you were partly to blame, California’s pure comparative fault rule reduces your compensation by that share and does not bar it.

Deadlines for a Long Beach Uber Accident Claim

ClaimDeadlineAuthority
Injury lawsuit against a driver or companyGenerally 2 years from the crashCode of Civil Procedure 335.1
Claim against the City (including the airport), Long Beach Transit, Metro, or the State6 months from the injuryGovernment Code 911.2
Injured childTwo-year deadline generally tolled until 18; the six-month claim is not pausedCode of Civil Procedure 352

Talking to Uber’s or Lyft’s insurer does not stop either clock. Where a child’s government claim was missed, late-claim relief may be available under Government Code 911.4 and 911.6 if it is sought within one year. See the full guide to California personal injury time limits.

How We Handle an Uber Accident Case for Clients in Long Beach

  1. Free consultation, by phone or video.
  2. Trip data request to the rideshare company, with your screenshots and receipt attached.
  3. Video preservation letters to nearby businesses, and to the airport or transit agency where a camera may have recorded the crash.
  4. Coverage review: the rideshare policy, each driver’s policy, and your own UM/UIM coverage.
  5. Government claim, if one applies, inside six months.
  6. Demand, negotiation, and a lawsuit where needed. Any suit is filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, whose South District sits at the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse in downtown Long Beach. The court assigns each case to a courthouse.
